Peñalver (1937-1995), the quintessential 20th Century American Surrealistic Artist of his generation, was a prolific painter before his paralysis in 1979. The ensuing years were challenging as he depicted his transition from walking to wheels in hundreds of paintings. Harlequin with Wings Holding a Red Tulip (1988); grateful for his friend and fellow artist Fernando Duarte whose creative ingenuity designed brush extensions for Ricardo which allowed him to paint large works after his paralysis. Ricardo painted his close circle of friends and used them as models in many of his paintings,
