Peñalver (1937-1995), the quintessential 20th Century American Surrealistic Artist of his generation, was a prolific painter before his paralysis in 1979. The ensuing years were challenging as he depicted his transition from walking to wheels in hundreds of paintings. Hope (1990); is one of a number of imaginative urban owls, with distinctive and sometimes peculiar characteristics, Ricardo painted in his studio. They became the artist's little companions as well as essential sources of humor and inspiration. Hope is one of 13 of Ricardo's owls that were featured in a promotional calendar for the CA Governor's Committee for Employment of Disabled Persons including a PSA on CBS KPIX San Francisco in 2002.
