Artist's Description

Peñalver (1937-1995), the quintessential surrealistic artist of his generation, was a prolific painter before his paralysis in 1979. The dynamic artwork of this highly visible San Francisco Bay Area artist was greatly impacted, and his work was limited in scale as he depicted his transition from walking to wheels in hundreds of paintings. By virtue of his tenacity, he taught himself to paint left-handed. Eventually, he regained the use of his right hand and with the aid of brush extensions, he rediscovered his art and worked on a large scale again.

Hungry Children (c.1968) was painted by the energetic and passionate able-bodied Ricardo. He painted to bring awareness of those less fortunate and sometimes these paintings were socially unaccepted. However, this painting was originally purchased by a well know anesthesiologist and it was after his death that Alexa was able to obtain it and add it to her personal collection.
