Peñalver (1937-1995), the quintessential 20th Century American Surrealistic Artist of his generation, was a prolific painter before his paralysis in 1979. The ensuing years were challenging as he depicted his transition from walking to wheels in hundreds of paintings. Spirit of My Spine (1980); 7 months after being paralyzed, Ricardo shares with us his before and after paintings on canvasses of his healthy left hand and pelvis and his new reality of an injured right hand, pelvic region and sacrum. Pay special attention to his healthy spine's spirit holding on by a thread at his feet.
